This harkens back to Rome. Conquest led to farmers being away from their land too long, which led to their land being bought out by the wealthy, and then having slaves work the consolidated land. These operations, called latifundia, led to enormous unrest in the Late Republic. In Athelica, mass production and slavery are having a similar effect on local businesses.
